For couples with young children in Singapore, one of the factors to consider when renovating their homes is designing spaces that cater to their little ones. From playrooms with a rock wall and monkey bar to a library for young bookworms, there are a ton of possibilities. And with plenty of kids’ home and decor stores to shop at in Singapore, turning a house into a child-friendly haven has never been easier.

This semi-detached home in Telok Kurau takes things up a notch by dedicating an entire storey to children. The homeowners have even incorporated imaginative elements like a trampoline ball pit suspended in mid-air. The result: a space where their grandkids can roam freely and play to their hearts’ content, all without compromising on the home’s aesthetics.

Here are some of the standout features we love about this modern family retreat:

Designing a home that caters to children requires striking a balance between creativity and functionality, especially when there are 4 of them. The homeowners requested that the 3rd and attic storeys of the 6,000sqft home be dedicated to their grandchildren, and Grace Chua from Notion of W delivered.

She crafted 4 unique kids’ bedrooms, personalised for each child while maintaining a cohesive design across the level.

Grace and her team introduced cheerful pops of colour in each room, set against a neutral backdrop to maintain visual harmony. “This approach ensures the design remains cohesive, while still allowing each child to express their individuality, creating a vibrant and inviting space that feels both unified and personalised,” she said.

At the heart of this kid-centric floor is the suspended ball pit━a fun-filled nook that doubles as a space for reading and relaxation. The unique feature has small entry points that invite children to crawl in, offering them a sense of intimacy and playful adventure. And don’t worry, the design company ensured that safety standards are met, with secure netting attached to reinforced walls.

“Initially, the homeowners envisioned a slide for the space, but I proposed the netted area instead,” Grace revealed. “This choice encourages interaction among the kids and offers more opportunities for safe creative play. I’d like to think it also helps to strengthen their bonds.”

Movie projections on the walls add an extra layer of entertainment, turning this space into a multi-functional area where the children can play and unwind.

A seamless blend of Japandi minimalism

While the kids enjoy their suspended play nook, the rest of this semi-detached home serves as a tranquil retreat for the homeowners, offering an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Upon entering, you’re welcomed by a calming fusion of Japanese and Scandinavian design philosophies. Neutral tones, clean lines, and minimalist decor come together to create an atmosphere of serenity, where open spaces are balanced with warmth and cosiness. It goes without saying, but every detail has been thoughtfully designed to maximise functionality without sacrificing the seamless aesthetic that defines this home.

One standout feature is the built-in cabinetry, which integrates effortlessly into the minimalist design. Finished in warm wood tones, the cabinetry flows smoothly with the walls, providing ample storage while maintaining the uncluttered look of the space.

The bathrooms continue on this theme of serene elegance, offering spa-like escapes within the home. Each of the 6 bathrooms has its own distinct character, yet all carry the same calming aesthetic as the rest of the house. One bathroom channels a modern Aesop storefront vibe, with a crisp palette of white, light wood accents, and striking black frames. Wooden blinds allow sunlight to gently filter through, creating a soothing, natural glow.

Another bathroom transports you to a tropical retreat, with pastel blue tiles in the wet area and a skylight above the standalone bathtub. The effect is reminiscent of open-air bathrooms found in tropical vacation spots like Bali or Phuket, where natural light and a sense of openness add to the relaxing, holiday-like feel.

Creating a harmonious connection between nature and home

The home’s open-plan living areas are another testament to the perfect blend of Japanese and Scandinavian design. Floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding glass doors connect the indoors to the lush garden, inviting natural light to flood the space. This design choice also embraces the Japanese concept of Shakkei, where the outdoor environment becomes part of the home’s interior, enhancing the sense of openness.

This connection to nature isn’t just visual; it extends the home’s footprint, making the living spaces feel more expansive. The use of natural materials, such as wood finishes and minimalist furniture, reinforces this sense of harmony with the outdoors. Whether the homeowners are relaxing in the living room or looking out at the garden, the space has been designed to foster a tranquil and modern living experience that feels at one with nature.
