Even in matrimony, couples cannot agree on everything. In particular, not everybody’s interior design preferences are the same—navigating the challenge of making sure everyone’s aesthetic wants are accounted for is difficult, which is why this couple’s home is a clever blend of two design styles, resulting in a unique Mid-Japandi aesthetic.

Here, Mid-Japandi refers to the blend of the mid-century modern and Japandi interior design styles. The combination creates an aesthetic unique to the home—a result of the couple’s compromise for the sake of a unified creative direction.

Compromising on a Mid-Japandi home

The identity of Mid-Japandi interior design revolves around the balance of the utilitarian elements of Japandi accented by the unique timeless look of mid-century modern interiors.

Mid-Japandi living room

While it may seem that Japandi and mid-century modern have too many elements that seem irreconcilable, skillful combination of these elements result in a warm minimalist interior with flashes of vibrant, retro flair.

Complementing furniture & textures that anchor the Mid-Japandi aesthetic

An example of this Mid-Japandi balance is exemplified by the layering of different colours and textures into its simple design, a hallmark of mid-century influence. By doing so, the home remains austere without being too devoid of personality, which is a common pitfall of Japandi designs.

Rich colours like the deep cobalt on the velvet chair play into the mid-century modern theme and give the home a feeling of cosy luxury.

These bold colours are accented by the otherwise muted colour palette of the home seen in the creamy porcelain floor tiles, or furniture in light wood tones. These elements typical of the Japandi aesthetic anchor the look and help to support the pops of colour and accentuate their deep saturation.

A perfect example of a supporting piece is this USM TV console in the living room, in a subdued oak shade. At $3,500, it’s the big ticket item of the home, making it a true “cosy luxury” splurge item. The premium console is flanked by dark wood speakers and a turntable to play records, adding to the vintage vibes of the space.

One area of the home that certainly proves its retro influences is the kitchen. The interplay of different textures and colours is reminiscent of kitchens you would see on classic American TV shows like Mad Men, which one of the homeowners admits inspired the home’s mid-century modern stylings.

The reason for the eclectic collection of materials and colours was spontaneous, according to the homeowners, who liked every suggestion by the contractors and IDs so much that they incorporated everything.

On the flipside, the minimalist nature of the home also shows in the kitchen through its wired glass doors leading out into the service yard. This, along with the tactile metallic light switches around the home, adds a modern touch to the mid-japandi aesthetic.

Framed memories & wall art add an artistic touch

Walls along the home are filled with wall ornaments like framed portraits taken of the couple to an impressively large hand-painted wall art canvas. Artistic additions like these add personality to the home’s aesthetic, with every decoration telling an interesting story.
