8 Tiny Home Makeovers In Singapore For #HouseGoals Under 70 SQM

26 January 2022 | BY

While small homes bring challenges when it comes to reno, these tiny homes prove that isn’t impossible to create one that’s stylish and cosy.

In land scarce Singapore, getting a big house isn’t a luxury many of us can afford. With the average 3-room flat in Singapore clocking in under 70 sqm, it’s easy to think that you’re limited in terms of renovation options.

While it can be challenging to fit all of your home ideals into a smaller space, these eight tiny home makeovers in Singapore will prove that impossible is nothing, and you can have both style and function even if you don’t have heaps of square footage.

1. Eclectic Chic

Looking more like a boutique hotel than an HDB flat, this 2-room HDB flat in Dawson gives 50s chic a new lease of life with some modern upgrades. The smart use of mirrors, fluted glass on diner-inspired doors and low-lying furniture in this home allows natural light to travel through the house, giving off the illusion of a larger space.

A floating dresser console in the bedroom also works wonders to allow more light into the room

If you’ve been enamored with the Jungalow trend, you’ll know that there is no limitation to what you can do to create a quirky, bohemian space. But if you’re worried a tiny home may transform your jungalow dream aesthetic into a hot mess, this blend of bohemian and industrial elements will give you hope.

This home is only 37 sqm – that’s slightly more than half the size of a 3-room flat, but it definitely doesn’t look as small thanks to the incorporation of sliding doors and the smart use of built-in carpentry.

3. Farmhouse Electic

Condo interiors can sometimes look a bit cookie-cutter, especially if you’re retaining most of the layout and flooring. This Canberra Residences apartment, on the other hand, is brimming with character thanks to its eclectic blend of styles.

It’s got a little bit of everything from rustic farmhouse with the white brick walls and barn doors to modern luxe, with the wall trims and marble flooring.

4. Black and white Chic

If colourful interiors are not up your alley, you can still create a stylish home design with a black-and-white palette. This monochromatic home uses lots of white to draw natural light into this one-bedroom condo unit.

Clean, bold lines are also used to add dramatic character and dimension to the space without making it too sterile. Glass sliding doors are used in place of walls to demarcate the bedroom, living area and balcony whilst allowing maximum sunlight into the home.

6. Cosy Scandinavian

If you’re looking to completely replicate the Scandinavian homes you see in interior design magazines, the trick is to keep things simple. You won’t go wrong with the timeless white-on-wood combination. This particular 45 sqm apartment used white floating shelves, and track lights to these fixtures into the background to give the illusion of a bigger space.

Fitting a store-bought desk into a smaller bedroom with a queen-sized bed might be quite a tall order. If you’re faced with a similar predicament, consider getting your interior designers to conjure up a custom floating desk for you. You can even consider creating a windowsill seating area that doubles up as a storage solution.

7. Minimalist MUJI

The Muji aesthetic has taken the world by storm for its minimal and modern take on Japanese living. This 42 sqm home fully encapsulates the Muji aesthetic with its all-wooden floor-to-ceiling custom bookshelf and TV console. The use of built-in LED lights and overhead track lighting help to brighten up the otherwise dark corners of each cubby hole.

If you haven’t noticed, the entire design is pretty seamless and the raised platform spans the length of the room’s wall to create a Japanese sitting area and raised platform bed on the other end of the room.

The surefire way to widen a small space is to stick to a bright colour palette, but this 51 sqm resale studio is proof that you need not shy away from black even if your home is on the small side.

The floor-to-ceiling windows in the home do allow for a tonne of light to flood to the home, even with all-black venetian blinds. The smart use of fluted glass doors and glass panels carved into dividing walls allow natural light to travel between rooms, brightening up the space.
