Here’s a colourful Scooby-Doo themed HDB flat with an eclectic look inspired by some of the homeowner’s favourite films.

Where most homes tend to be done up in wood, calming cream shades or neutral whites or greys, here’s something that breaks the mould: a colourful Scooby-Doo themed HDB flat that has made full use of an artist’s palette. With an eclectic look that’s inspired by some of the homeowner’s favourite films, this $60K reno by Ascend Design is a fun visual treat.

Energetic green-themed living room

A great first impression for guests to this home, the living room is defined by comfy shades, fluffy textures and eclectic furniture. The pastel shades used make this place feel casual and energetic, but also chosen to preserve the visually appealing marble flooring that came with this flat.

That said, green is the dominant shade in this home, a tongue-in-cheek reference to the Mystery Machine van in the Scooby Doo series. The bouclé couches and adorably retro rug help soften the room due to their texture but also due to the organic shapes and patterns on them too.

There are also plenty of decor pieces that give the place a retro vibe as well, including a checkered lampshade, posters, old marvel comics and even a quaint little toolbox.

Although eclectic, there is a method to the colourful madness found here, with much of the home’s palette being done through the employment of colour blocking techniques, using colours at opposite ends of the colour wheel to create a quirky, aesthetically pleasing look.

Master bathroom inspired by Grease

The bathroom was the most expensive part of the home reno, with its look inspired by the movie Grease. Specifically, the retro checkerboard patterns and colouration are meant to recreate the diner scenes in the 1978 film. The pastel purple, orange and sky blue is an unusual palette, but actually blends together quite well and gives the bathroom an eclectic charm.

An interesting detail is that they’ve moved the vanity outside, creating a mini walk-in wardrobe and sink feature in the master bedroom. The glass bricks are also a nice addition, reinforcing the retro theme but also enhancing the sense of spaciousness in this area.

Boldly coloured kitchen and dining space

The kitchen and dining space stands out due to the contrast between the bold green walls and bright orange features. The choice of having 3/4 painted walls helps to give the walls visual depth, creating height in the room, and also avoids having the green overwhelm the other colours.

Again we see more retro decor, this time in the form of acrylic chairs and a tile-patterned flower vase. Energetic and bold, this colour scheme enlivens the space.

Inside a colourful scooby-doo themed HDB flat

This home moves away from convention, with the homeowner choosing to simply want a few features to be made in the image of some of their favourite films whilst allowing the ID to have the creative freedom to make something that is quite unique in a sea of Japandi and Scandi apartments.

Perhaps folks looking at their own reno plans right now could afford to experiment with bolder shapes and more eclectic aesthetics as well.
