This landed home in Paya Lebar shows us how a coastal beach house in a landlocked neighbourhood can be done in style.

Despite Singapore being a coastal city, most homes here have Scandinavian or Japandi interiors that pay zero homage to our island locale. This landed home in Paya Lebar, however, bucks the trend and shows us how a coastal settlement can be done in style.

This stunning property, designed by Icon Interior, embodies all the hallmarks of a chic beach house that belongs somewhere in the Hamptons. From a rustic but clean living room to an expandable kitchen for BBQ parties, it’s hard to believe this home is situated in Singapore. There’s even an attic playroom for kids that looks like a fairytale forest.

Linen curtains, light wood floors, and quirky home decor are some of the signature elements of coastal interior design, and they’re all present in the living room of this home in Paya Lebar. The furnishing has also been tastefully done: 2 fabric couches add sophistication while the TV console and “fireplace” give it a cosy, charming vibe.

The feature wall with its horizontal white wall panels also draws your gaze more than a limewashed or plain white wall would.

Just off the living room is the kitchen which is split into wet and dry areas. The dry kitchen sports gorgeous blue cabinets with gold hardware, with a large counter to prep all the ingredients and marinades for BBQ parties. It is also kept simple and clean with no built-in carpentry above the counters, just simple open shelves to keep things rustic.

Lots of natural light streams in through the black-framed glass doors, which also separate the wet and dry kitchen.

The long counter in the middle extends all the way out to the wet kitchen as well. A more functional sink sits on this half, and this is where the stovetop and oven are located as well. Strings of fairy lights and bubble pendant lamps add a touch of whimsy to the space, and we bet that this outdoor kitchen space becomes super inviting at night.

“Enchanted forest” playroom attic

At the top of this Paya Lebar beach house is an attic that looks nothing like the rest of the home. A forest-inspired wallpaper clads the walls, and there’s even a faux tree occupying one corner of the room. The floor has been covered with a mossy carpet to evoke the texture of walking in a forest.

A flight of stairs also leads to a hidden loft area where an indoor garden tea party can be held. Strings of fairy lights cap off the enchanted vibes, almost as though evoking an Alice in Wonderland aesthetic.

Hotel-worthy marble master bathroom

The master bathroom keeps to the same black-and-white colour palette that dominates the rest of the home. Tiled marble with striking black veins lines the walls and floors; a freestanding bathtub with a black exterior and white interior sits by the corner; special mosaic tiles with a black-and-white pattern frame the porcelain throne.

However, the piece de resistance is the walnut vanity with his-and-hers sinks. Individual mirrors with matching walnut frames complete the whole look. A grey velvet chaise lounge elevates the space from a mere bathroom into a chic personal spa.
