This $73K 4-room BTO renovation by Singaporean homeowners N and M alongside Fifth Avenue Interior has definitely left its mark on us. It’s seriously impressive how your typical BTO flat can be transformed into a sprawling beige oasis softened by subtle curves and ambient lighting.

A faux open fireplace from Taobao for camping vibes

A fireplace in a Japandi home might strike you as an odd addition, but with camping as one of their big loves, the homeowners wanted to incorporate some design elements that would remind them of the great outdoors. Thus, the idea for this faux open fireplace console was born.

The result is actually pretty genius because the faux flames cast a warm and inviting glow around the home and the TV. It also makes lounging around the fireplace quite the realistic vibe in this HDB flat.
DIY limewash walls saved the couple $3.2K
In the 1,001sqft home, the couple knew from the very beginning that limewash paint would be the perfect complement to their Japandi home and they set out sourcing for quotes.

The decision to take the job upon themselves came when all the quotes sourced from independent vendors and Carousell came at the starting price of $3,200. In the end, the entire DIY process took them 2 days, but they successfully managed to achieve the look they had dreamed of—well worth the effort, we’d say.

For aesthetic continuity throughout the home, the homeowners also made sure everything from their floor tiles and sintered stone countertops in the kitchen, to their cabinet laminate and doors were in the same creamy lime wash finish.

On top of that, white door handles were chosen to disguise as much of the bedroom doors as possible. The result, to the untrained eye, is an optical illusion of hidden passageways throughout the home that close off to create a more intimate space when gatherings are hosted.

What would a Japandi home be without curves? Instead of overdoing it with free-flowing arches at every turn, homeowners N and M took a more subtle approach. Look around the home and you’ll find little curves tucked into inconspicuous corners of the home. The result? A smooth visual flow through the home from the minute you enter.

Another interesting thing you’ll notice about this BTO flat is its unconventional floor plan—especially where the bedrooms are concerned. While it’s quite obvious that one of the flat’s original bedrooms was hacked away to make room for an adjacent dining hall, the remaining two rooms have been further combined to create a walk-in wardrobe and a master bedroom. There’s even a small guest bedroom that can be accessed from the same walk-in wardrobe closet.
The homeowners also shared that Taobao was where they purchased the bulk of their furniture from. This included everything from their coffee table and sofa, to their sinks and bedframe. They also purchased their faux fireplace and skylight in the bathroom, and in total, it only cost the couple $6.2K inclusive of shipping.
