Plain and simple, with special attention to its surrounding nature, this $100K MUJI-themed open-concept HUDC unit reno is a wonderful example of minimalism.
But to truly appreciate this 1,600sqft, 3-room condo, you have to look into the finer details, like the design choices as well as little touches of personality that are scattered throughout the flat.
Wall-to-wall Bearbricks glass display in the movie room
The homeowner is an avid collector of Bearbricks figurines, some of which is housed in a room that doubles as a movie area. Half-jokingly, he shared that this gave him more of a reason to visit the room━and his collection.
The homeowner has a whopping 1,300 Bearbricks in his 15-year-old collection━too many even to fit in his wall-to-wall glass display.
Specially curated for the display, he of course had to include his favourite Kaws collaboration piece, alongside a couple pieces that were collected as part of a series, such as the Kineko set and a set inspired by Van Gogh.
A wall-to-wall window with a dreamy view
One of the primary reasons that the homeowner bought this unit was because he fell in love with the gorgeous view of MacRitchie Reservoir, with its dense foliage and waterways. The home renovation consequently features huge windows in every room to let you take in the sunlight and surrounding greenery.
Being a high floor unit, the expanse of windows also means that the homeowners get to enjoy plenty of breeze.
MUJI-esque interior that is simple & timeless
The interior design itself is minimalistic and MUJI-inspired, with a simple, neutral palette. The wood shades here are very consistent, with the same light shade being used for their furniture, cabinet vinyl overlays and flooring, creating a cohesive look.
The minimalist, spacious living room is given a splash of colour through 3 posters that remind the homeowner of their pet dog, Haku.
There is an ample amount of carpentry in the living room, which cleverly extends into a seating nook and wood slat divider that hides the rest of this Muji-inspired HUDC home from prying eyes at the front door. The customised cabinet even comes with a hideaway for their robot vacuum, and a cut-out bottom so it can be deployed directly while preserving the sleek look of the home.
The spacious study room doubles up as a home gym.
Beyond the collections housed in the cabinets, there’s plenty of other places where toys line the room, including the air-conditioner ducts and on top of the compressor.
The study room doubles as a guest room too, with a neat Murphy bed. This way the study room preserves its spaciousness, whilst still giving the homeowners the option to house visiting friends or family members.
A wooden counter installed under the long windows of the study room makes this a tranquil relaxation nook with a stunning view of the reservoir.
Expansive open-concept kitchen with integrated dining table
The kitchen is just as sleek as the living room, with white countertops and backsplashes that seamlessly blend in with the walls. All of the appliances in this home have been specifically purchased according to the all-white colour scheme. The space as a whole has a bright and spacious feel, thanks in part to all the built-ins being kept below waist level.
The dining table is an extension of the kitchen island, where there is plenty of real estate for both food preparation and the popiah parties that the homeowner likes to host.
A peek into the little trinkets and baubles that decorate the kitchen, alongside the window that provides yet another serene view of the surroundings.
Indoor garden complete with artificial skylight
Inspired by the greenery outside, the homeowners elected to create an indoor garden. In fact, it was one of the first things he thought of having when he got the unit. Rather than install an artificial plant, the homeowners decided to go with a real potted plant that thrived under the artificial skylight which they installed.
The artificial skylight itself is actually recessed, so as to further reinforce the illusion of a real skylight.
“You have to walk through a jungle to get to the bathroom,” the homeowner jokes━their plant has been growing sideways into the entry of the bathroom, rather than up.
Service yard lined with fun tiles that’s dedicated to their pet
Look down when you enter the service yard, and you’ll spot real flowers that have been pressed into the tiles used here. Together with the patterned wall tiles, this area is a step away from the minimalist clean look of the rest of the home.
The wall here is printed with tiles that are printed with dogs, including a Japanese spitz just like Haku.
MUJI-themed HUDC flat with a lake view for a Bearbricks collector
Interestingly enough, this muji-themed HUDC home was entirely designed by the homeowner himself. He personally measured the dimensions of the home, created the plan and liaised directly with a contractor to make it a reality. If you too have a particular idea that you wish to bring into reality, perhaps also consider the idea of trying out creating your own reno plans from scratch.
