There’s no denying our undying love for hotpot, and sitting squarely in first place is none other than Hai Di Lao. With an average bill at HDL totalling $100, it should come as no surprise that the co-founder, Zhang Yong, is next-level ballin’ with a net worth of US$19 billion according to Forbes in late 2021.

Before making Singapore home in 2018, Zhang Yong and his family already wasted no time in acquiring a pretty piece of property to call his own: a $27M good class bungalow (GCB) on Gallop Road in 2016. And while that was a modest purchase, in 2021, his son, Mr Zhang Hanzhi, put in an offer and purchased the GCB next door for $42M.
Here’s what we know about the newest home:

Known as the winged house, this GCB was designed by the architectural firm K2LD.

Sitting in a cul-de-sac, the $42M home is the brainchild of architectural firm K2LD Architects and Interiors and is especially noteworthy for its many design accolades. The SIA Architectural Design Award in 2013 for ‘Residential Projects (Individual Houses)’ is one of the many accolades it’s got in the bag.

Termed the “Winged House” for its angular roof “wings”, the home features sweeping open-concept living spaces, walls of glass and clean angular lines. A definitive feature of the home is definitely its seamless use of Burmese teak wood to add depth, warmth and rustic quality to an otherwise modern and monochromatic colour palette.

The overall inspiration for the home’s design came from the elevated stilt and thatched roofs of traditional Malay houses. This staggered adaptation allows sunlight to flood the home and promotes good airflow.

The low-lying modular furniture in the living room not only makes the room feel cosy but makes the space feel larger than it already is. The floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors also seamlessly meld indoor and outdoor living to make you feel like you’re in a luxury Bali resort.

The angular design of the roof spanning all the way down to the ground also affords certain patios in the home more privacy whilst giving them an unadulterated view of the foliage that surrounds the house.

GCBs are exclusively reserved for the rich and famous in Singapore, and we’d expect the once richest man in Singapore to own at least one of these prime properties. Now that our eyes are green with envy, it’ll probably make us think twice about shelling out so much money for HDL…or not!
