Living room inspired by Squirtle’s blue & Bulbasaur’s green
Greeting visitors as they enter this home is a statement wall in front of the main door, with its bright and upbeat blue subway tiles inspired by everyone’s favourite water type Pokemon: Squirtle. The texture of the tiles, highlighted by the warm light from the wall mounted lamp, is also reminiscent of the sun against a blue sky.
The walls of the living room were given a two-tone treatment, with the top done up in neutral off-white, and the rest painted in apple green, bringing to mind the Pocket Monster Bulbasaur. Separating the two parts of the wall is a line in dark green, staying true to the Bulbasaur vibe.
In order to make the best use of an awkward layout in the living room, the ID ingeniously filled in the corner with a TV corner. The slanted shape of the built-in console adds to the quirky and casual vibe of the overall theme, whilst creating a smooth line visually leading to the bedrooms.
The sleek and simple design of the home, with almost all its cabinet doors having recessed handles, gives it a modern preppy quality, whilst also providing lots of space for all of the Pokemon-themed toys and trinkets that the homeowners have.
The Castlery sofa is a much-loved purchase for the homeowners, who love it for its comfort and the curved nature of its design, which they feel brings people closer. The granite flooring was actually something the home’s previous owner installed; Nash especially loves that it is always cool to the touch.
Colourful mismatched dining set adds quirkiness
The dining area has a distinct eclecticism to it, with its vibrantly coloured furniture and asymmetrical design. This quirky, whimsical look is further emphasised through the deliberate choice of having the different-sized pendant lights above the table.
Built-in, secondary dining area & kitchen island
The kitchen bears yet more sleek cabinetry, with laminate wood panels bordered in blue to match the TV console.
Nash wanted to create an island for more countertop space, which presented a challenge given the limited real estate available in the kitchen. What the ID came up with was a kitchen island that doubles up as a second dining table, maximising the use of space here. It has plenty of storage too, both under the kitchen island and beneath the built-in bench behind it.
$800 custom Pikachu bathroom door
The unmissable Pikachu toilet door was actually added on a whim, after Nash and Hakim’s ID suggested that they get custom door handles for the home. It took some designing and cost something like $800, but the bright yellow door, with its Pikachu head-shaped window and its signature lightning tail, has turned out to be a purchase that the couple simply adores.
Behind the Pikachu door, which sits in a pastel blue door frame, is a bathroom done up in Jigglypuff-inspired baby pink━complete with painted plumbing and a pedestal basin. Like much of the home, it was given a two-tone treatment on the walls, with the top half done in pink subway tiles, and the bottom in terrazzo.
Home office with displays of collectibles
Rounding out this subtly Pokemon-themed home is Hakim’s man cave. Beyond the Pokemon plushies, this space also features lots of Naruto merchandise, which is his other big obsession.
Similar to the living room, the walls have been given a duo-tone treatment, with a border of crimson just beneath the ceiling━not only is it Hakim’s favourite colour, it also matches the red of his Naruto merch. Matching red curtains complete the look.
Instead of having the displays for his collectibles built into the room, Hakim and Nash opted for IKEA display cases, which was a cheaper option. It cost only $500 to get all of the cases he has in this room, instead of the much larger sum it would potentially have cost for built-ins.
