From fully furnished rooms to paid weekly cleaning, these rental shophouse rooms could align with the #homegoals you’ve always wanted.

Would You Pay $3K To Rent A Room In An Orchard Or Joo Chiat Shophouse?

The idea of paying a $3K rental for an entire home, let alone a single room, can feel a bit much for a lot of young adults who’ve barely begun their careers. But these rental shophouse rooms from Figment might fast-track you to those #homegoals you’ve always wanted.

Besides well-decorated, fully furnished rooms, rent also includes comprehensive utilities, such as Wi-Fi, a fully equipped kitchen and a washer-dryer combo. Weekly cleaning and supplies are provided as well, but one of the bigger perks that Figment has as part of the rental fee is access to the Figment Club House.

Valued at $450/month, this is an exclusive club membership that grants you access to the exciting Bohemian high-life through member-only spaces and exclusive events. Think art fairs, exhibitions, dinner parties, co-working spaces, lounge areas, and event space bookings – all on the house.

But let’s have a look at 6 studios first before we deliver a final verdict.

Little Nyonya Peranakan living on Cuppage Road from $3.2K

Looking almost like the set for a Little Nyonya episode, Cuppage House pays homage to the original design of the shophouse with features like ornamental floor tiles and varnished wood window covers. You will share this charming old-school shophouse with 5 other tenants, and the entire Orchard Shopping Belt is just a short walk down the road

Peninsula House – Modern monochromatic rooms with a Jungalow-themed common area

Visually stunning both outside and inside, Peninsula House blends both black-and-white colonial and jungalow styles to create a highly relaxed tropical vibe. The 5-minute walk from Farrer Park MRT means you’ll enjoy fast commutes to the CBD. Rooms here start at $3.5K, but the real perk is the kitchenette in your room with a small fridge, microwave, kettle and sink

Alawi House – Wes Anderson-vibes with art gallery-esque bedrooms from $2.7K

While it may be a stretch to compare it to the Grand Budapest Hotel, this vintage design and bright colours of Alawi House embody the fun and whimsy of Wes Anderson films. You enjoy a lower rent too, starting at $2.7K. The only downside is that you’d be dealing with a shared bathroom with your fellow tenants, though we’re sure it’s just as visually stunning.

Kongsi House – Danish living in Jalan Besar from $3K

With a comfortably modern Scandi-style design, Kongsi House comes furnished with plenty for its studios. In fact, the smallest one here almost feels like a European townhouse, with a gable roof, a kitchenette, a little dining setup for guests and a TV console. If you have more cash to spare though, then the Hainan Studio and Macau Studio will surely evoke envy.

Alexandra House – NYC-style brick-walled rooms & a communal lap pool

Swanky, decked in red brick and with a pool to boot, Alexandra House is undeniably gorgeous. If Kongsi House’s Fujian studio felt like a townhouse, this feels like a penthouse suite in the heart of the city. The only “issue” is that you’d have to make peace with 4 other housemates in this 3,100sqft of space. The cheapest room here goes for $3.1K, and comes with a Pinterest-worthy bathroom.

The cold brutalist exterior belies the fun Bauhaus style within the interior of Obor Obor House. Vibrant and colourful, this shophouse is home to 16 studios, meaning you’ll be able to have plenty of new friends to make. Even if you’re more of an introvert, rest assured that every studio is equipped with a bathroom, kitchenette, washing machine, and dryer, providing all you need.

Renting a fully-furnished shophouse room in Singapore

Figment’s shophouses are aesthetically pleasing, but the question is if it is worth the relatively high rental fees. These shophouses offer fully furnished rooms with ample space, potentially cool neighbours and an exclusive club membership. Ultimately, the choice here rests on how much you’d be using the perks and engaging with the community that Figment is building.

If this is just so that you’d have a room to stay in, then it’s probably not going to make economic sense. But if you and your friends love the idea of networking with professionals and enjoying a high-quality lifestyle regularly, the shophouses at Figment will give you an experience that few other places in Singapore can offer.
