Tucked away in Serangoon Avenue 4, this 4-room resale flat is proof that eclectic design can be both chaotic and charming in the best possible way. Purchased for $637K with about $70K spent on renovations, the home is a bold mix of colour, texture, and personality that makes every corner worth a second look.

If you’re toying with the idea of going eclectic for your next renovation, this home might just convince you that more really can be more.

We managed to get a home tour of this quirky flat, and here’s what we love about it.

A personality-rich, eclectic home without a theme

Right from the get go, the homeowners clearly know how to make a statement with furniture, because each piece is practically screaming for attention in the best way possible. From the bright blue armchair to the vibrant orange leather lounger, the furniture here doesn’t just serve its purpose, it defines the space.

Plaids, checks, and bright solid colours all contribute to the chaotic yet energetic appeal of the living room. The addition of chrome nesting coffee tables enhances the maximalist vibe, reflecting and amplifying the colours around the room, making each corner pop with personality.

Every piece feels intentional, telling its own story yet blending seamlessly into the bigger picture. You can practically tell what the homeowner’s weekend playlist might sound like.

What really ties everything together, though, is the abundance of natural light flooding through the wide windows. It brings out the richness of the colours and patterns, making the space feel bright, warm, and comfortably eclectic rather than overwhelming.

A playfully modern kitchen & open bar

The overall kitchen design exudes a rustic yet Y2K aesthetic, with lots of checks and pops of primary colours, giving it a playful, retro vibe. The bar itself is an inviting, functional focal point, ideal for social gatherings, while the pops of red and other bright hues in the room ensure that the space never feels dull.

Above the bar, the open shelves are neatly arranged with a mix of colourful glassware, liquor bottles, and decorative objects, all contributing to the lively, playful atmosphere of the room. The shelves add a touch of personality and vibrancy while maintaining a sense of functional organization.

Further in, the kitchen features a rather modest design with traditional top and bottom cabinets, and a simple white stone countertop and tiled backsplash. The style, however, comes from the thoughtful details that add life and personality to the space.

From the checkered salt and pepper pots to the array of cutting boards and even the cooking pot, each piece makes a strong statement and adds to the fun of the flat.

The built-in storage unit in this living room doubles up as a clever doorway into the home office, proving that storage can go beyond function to shape the space’s character. Designed with shelves of varying sizes, it efficiently utilises vertical space to store books, decor, and other essentials without encroaching on the floor area.

The slightly off-center door and mix of displayed items inject visual rhythm, while the dark red cabinet and red-framed study doors add a bold, distinctive touch that makes the room feel unique.

It’s one of those quirky design choices that could’ve felt jarring in your mind but instead works to create a space that’s uniquely dynamic. The storage area doesn’t just serve its purpose, it’s perhaps the biggest statement piece in the flat.

A retro Y2K bathroom inspired by a swimming pool

Finally, the toilet feels like it’s straight out of an aquatic cartoon. With a swimming pool theme in mind, the homeowners went all out, choosing bold blue mosaic tiles that give off major old-school vibes. Throwing in the vintage glass block feature, this is essentially textbook Y2K.

To keep the space feeling open, the homeowners cleverly moved the sink outside, making the bathroom feel bigger and more airy. They’ve also allowed lots of natural light in so the darker colour palette doesn’t make the bathroom feel too small.

From the checkered kitchenware to the clash of plaid and metal in the living room, it’s the kind of home that is defiant in the face of “safe” beige interiors. The homeowners have managed to strike that sweet spot between quirky and cohesive, showing that even a standard HDB flat can be transformed into a space that feels vibrant, lived-in, and full of soul.
