Smart home technology used to be considered more of a gimmick and less of a quality-of-life improvement. But as advancements continue to be made, smart home upgrades are fast becoming an intrinsic part of everyday life. So, if you’ve yet to dip your toes into the world of fancy home tech but want to get started, drop by the Sustainable Smart Living Asia Pacific Fair 2025 happening at Expo, from 12th to 20th July, 11am to 9pm daily.
Organised by Asia Pacific Furniture Fair, this expo blends smart home living with a dash of eco-friendliness by focusing on recycled and sustainable materials, as well as energy-efficient appliances.
Fun finds from the Sustainable Smart Living Fair 2025 at Expo
We dropped by the Sustainable Smart Living Fair 2025 at Expo on the first day to have a look, and a few things caught our eye. Since it’s a home and furniture fair after all, there were the usual suspects—mattress companies, booths hawking white goods such as refrigerators and washing machines, as well as essentials including sofas and dining sets.
But what sets this furniture fair apart from its peers is the prominence and integration of smart home technology. Everywhere we turned, we saw everyday items that have been elevated.
Take the humble water heater, for example. Now, you may be wondering, “Why does a water heater need to be smart? Why does it need to connect to Wi-Fi?” At least, that’s what we thought at first.
As it turns out, smart water heaters are pretty dang useful as you can switch it on ahead of time, set your preferred water temperature, and monitor your water consumption all through an app. Besides convenience, this will also help you be more mindful of your water usage habits.
The gas water heaters offered by Life by City Energy were especially attention grabbing thanks to a combination of factors—their sleek, yet colourful and playful designs, as well as their claim to help you cut down on electricity usage and carbon emissions.
According to the brand, “a household can save $1,200 [each year] by using a gas water heater based on a study by NEA.” On top of that, you can “save up to 80% in carbon emissions by using a gas water heater as compared to [an] electric storage water heater.”
Gas water heaters can also heat up water in seconds while providing enough pressure for rain showers, combining the best of storage and instant water heaters. So, if you’re in the market for shower upgrades, here’s something to consider.
Sometimes, all it takes is a small tweak to elevate something pedestrian into a luxury. Such is the case with the smart toilets from Vivi, sold by Cleanovate.
These smart toilets boast features such as that automatically open and close, temperature control for the seats, concealed bidets, and self-cleaning functions. Some models even offer warm air-drying so that your delicate tush never has to come into contact with the rough surface of a sheet of toilet paper ever again.
Even sofas and armchairs can be “smart”. The Aibi V-Sofa had us stopping in our tracks thanks to its unique design. It’s a vibrating armchair that claims to improve your health in a plethora of ways, from reducing stress and pain to improving your core strength. You can even remove the cushioned seat and turn it into a vibrating platform to enhance your workout.
Although we can’t guarantee its efficacy, it could be a fun addition to shake up your living room decor.
Showflat tours, a “glasshouse” & fengshui consultation
Interestingly, we came across a few large booths that doubled as showflats. The Sustainable Smart Living Fair heavily markets the BTO mockup flat created by interior design firm Woodcraft and retailer IUIGA, which incorporates sustainable building materials and smart home tech in a real space that you can experience for yourself.
There’s also the Axion Design showflat, which showcases the design firm’s carpentry capabilities. The impressive multi-room set-up was spacious enough even though there was a small crowd eager to consult the firm’s interior designers.
As part of the fair, Axion Design is offering exclusive deals on their comprehensive renovation packages. The BTO 3-room 9-in-1 package, for example, covers everything from custom carpentry for each to sofas and dining sets, for just $14,888. This package has a warranty of 3 years and comes with free delivery and installation.
Part of the reason why they’re able to keep prices low despite using good materials is because they have their own production factory in Malaysia, which lets them cut out the middleman and do everything in-house, thereby also ensuring quality control.
There are multiple interior design firms providing free consultation services throughout the fair, so you can speak with the interior designers personally and see who you click with.
We also spotted a cute miniature mockup demonstrating how automated lighting systems can be combined with kinetic switches and smart home apps to set the mood for every occasion, from intense study sessions to chill movie nights with the family.
What’s marketed as a “glasshouse” is actually a set-up by Smart Door that showcases rollerblinds and automatic door lock systems. The double-glazed windows, with encase rollerblinds between two sheets of glass, had us taking a second look since they are not as common in Singapore.
Double-glazed windows actually help keep the heat out, which means that you can spend less on cooling your home on hot days. Plus, the double layer also serves to reduce noise pollution, which is pretty important if you happen to live somewhere where construction and traffic sounds are inescapable.
Plus, since the rollerblinds are sandwiched within the window itself, they’re essentially dust-proof and you never have to spend time cleaning them. These windows can be adjusted manually through levers and knobs, or you can choose to connect them to automated systems and control them via remote switches.
If you believe in fengshui or think that one can never be too careful, consider checking out the TianLu Geomancy booth headed by Master Rayden. There, you can get a kitchen layout consultation from Master Rayden—free of charge!
When you’re ready to go all-in, you can choose from a variety of Home Fengshui packages. Some are basic and cover things such as the most auspicious time to move into your new house and start renovations, while others are more comprehensive.
Reconnecting with nature even in a smart home
Although this expo primarily focuses on smart home tech, there’s also a secondary focus on sustainability. That’s where booths like Earthscape come in.
The company offers tailored urban garden solutions and landscaping services that let you bring greenery to your doorstep. The award-winning company has partnered with esteemed hotels and worked on government projects, so you can be assured they know what they’re doing.
Besides helping you design and build your dream urban garden, they also offer regular landscape maintenance work such as weed control, soil aeration, automated irrigation control, and water feature servicing.
Right now, they offer landed home packages for $400-$600 per visit/month, and condo balcony packages for $300-$400 per visit/month.
In a sea of smart home gadgets, one booth specialising in solid wood furniture stood out in particular. We spotted ornate handcarved wooden beds, sturdy storage cabinets, sleek dining sets, and even a swing chair.
Made from a variety of wood such as teak, mahogany and muir, these solid wood pieces can last a lifetime if you take good care of them, which cuts down the waste involved with replacing furniture every few years.
Sometimes, sustainability isn’t about seeking out new-fangled materials, but about returning to basics and getting them from sustainable sources instead.
